Suggestions: Your response should include three elements. Those three elements are how your being a Police Officer is going to benefit the following in this order:

The community (the city limits).

The Department (your police department of choice).

Self (you, the individual).

 
For example: I want to be a Police Officer because I am a community oriented individual. I am a Big Brothers/Sisters volunteer, boy/girl scout leader, little league baseball coach, football coach, volleyball coach, swimming coach, volunteer in my child’s preschool, church counselor, volunteer at the local mission where I donate food, clothing, money, and time for those who may not be as fortunate as I am. However, now I wish to get involved in the (desired city’s) community from a law enforcement capacity. I am well aware that the City of ..... has an enormous problem with gang drive-by shootings where innocent people are being killed. It has an enormous problem with carjacking, robbery, narcotics trafficking, rape and murder. I wish to become involved in the community from a law enforcement capacity (which is how you articulate how you want to fight crime).

I chose the .... Police Department because I am aware of the fact that the... Police Department has over 250 job opportunities. I am not aware of all the opportunities, but I am aware that it has (name some entities that would be of interest to you) street patrol, bicycle detail, foot-beat units, air support, K-9 unit, dive team, bomb squad, abuse child unit, background investigations, recruitment, administrative positions. It has 18 different geographic patrol divisions (this is important because your knowing that the City has 18 different geographic patrol divisions shows that you have done some research into the position). There are numerous opportunities for a variety of work assignments and numerous opportunities for upward mobility. This is not a job. This is a career. This is a career that would allow me to be a role model within my community. Also, this is a career that would allow me to live a comfortable, middle-class lifestyle; one that I am accustomed to, and one that I wish to continue. Those are the reasons why I wish to become a ... Police Officer.
